✨POV✨: Really looking to begin therapy but afraid of taking the first step? Looking to first try some therapeutic techniques by yourself at home?

Similar to exercise, when you warm up before you begin your workout, it can be beneficial for us to begin our healing process on our own first. Since depression can be a confusing space and experience to navigate, having the help of a supportive and compassionate mental health professional is essential. But when we take the first step towards our recovery on our own, we can feel more in control of the process and be more self-reliant for direction and effort.
But is there one correct way of beginning our healing journey? Absolutely not.
The one thumb rule to follow and depend on is that ‘we do the best we can do’.
So if we’re feeling up for it, DIY therapy is definitely worth a shot.
What is DIY Therapy? 👐🏼
DIY Therapy is a new-age therapeutic approach in which we become our own therapists and safe spaces. And it’s pretty intuitive, right? Who knows us better than we do, and who better to take care of us than ourselves. In simple words, we use our own resources and faculties to take care of our mental health.

How can we practice this? 🥊
There are many different ways in which we can approach DIY or self-therapy. Some of the common and easy methods are listed here:
💟 Self-love
This is absolutely one of the most essential steps of DIY therapy. Self-love means that we transform our internal dialogue (which may include negative and overly-critical thoughts of ourselves) into a constructive and nurturing driving force.
💅🏼 Self-care
This step follows self-love by putting this love into action.
Self-care can look like taking care of our physical health by eating healthy, sleeping right, drinking enough water, and getting regular exercise. Or taking care of our skin or hair or nails. Or our mental space by setting boundaries or staying connected with nature.
🤳🏼 Mini-Therapy
This tool is one of those that can be used in combination with any approach to therapy.
Thinking, ‘I feel like everything is a mess’ or ‘I see anxiety taking hold of me’?
You can process this emotion right then when you are experiencing this discomfort with the help of this mini (10-15 minute) session of therapy. These sessions are focused on the specific feelings that we all experience and allow us to immediately take action instead of simmering in the overwhelm.
🎯 Identifying goals
This is one step ahead of those mentioned above because identifying goals is most productive when the foundation of healthy coping mechanisms has been laid.
Identifying our goals helps us find direction and motivation. We can use prompts and journaling to explore what these mean for us. It can also be very helpful to break down these goals into smaller, short-term, achievable tasks.
As we achieve each of these tasks in chronology, not only are we progressing towards our goal, but we are also building our confidence and self-esteem.
📝 Journaling
This is a powerful tool to explore your mind, emotions, and behavior in a structured and organized way. Think of the pages of our journal as our mind itself - what we have to do now is give words to the feelings and thoughts. We need to pour ourselves on paper.
There are plenty of prompts, each designed to explore a different area of ourselves, readily available on the internet. And remember, journaling is a method of gaining internal clarity - so if at any point we feel like we still need to explore something, we just go for it because there really is no such thing as too much awareness.
🔂 Repeat and Practice
This step binds all the others together and helps us make the most of every second we spend taking care of ourselves. Creating a routine can help structure this DIY therapy process, making it easier to see how far we’ve come and if any approach needs to be changed.

DIY therapy is a beautiful process of self-exploration and growth. And with each moment of clarity, we find ourselves closer to feeling at peace with ourselves (beginning of the end for depression).
Please Note 🚩
Depression (aka clinical depression) is a mental illness that can be of two different types - mild depression (aka persistent depressive disorder) and major depression (aka severe depression or major depressive disorder). Common depression symptoms include prolonged depressed mood, low self-esteem, mood swings, loss of interest, and having trouble focusing. Other physical symptoms include sleep problems, weight gain, excessive sleeping, or difficulty concentrating.
Depression is also often accompanied by a mood disorder or other mental disorders such as seasonal affective disorder, bipolar disorder, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. If you have such symptoms of depression or thoughts of self-harm, please use the national suicide prevention lifeline or contact a primary care doctor to seek help in treating depression.
