✨POV✨: The relationship is great buuut sometimes we're left in the dark about our partner's anxiety and that feels so emotionally draining! Someone tell us how we can be supportive to them to stop anxiety from stealing the joy!
You may have seen TED Talks about anxiety and anxiety disorders or even read about them on Reddit.
But somehow, you only truly understand what they are or how they look when you’re in a relationship with a person who has anxiety or an anxiety disorder.
So if you're here to understand what triggers your partner’s anxiety and how to be a supportive partner, to build and sustain a healthy relationship, keep reading!
Anxiety and anxiety disorders 🥶
To be a supportive partner, it would take for you to first need to understand what makes your partner anxious.

Is the anxiety occasional anxiety?
Or is it a mental health issue or an anxiety disorder?
Feeling anxious thoughts or having anxiety when a person is in an uncomfortable situation is completely normal.
An anxiety issue begins when these anxious thoughts take a toll on people's mental health - a mental health condition called anxiety disorders.
Now, there are two ways of understanding anxiety roots.
If your partner’s anxiety disorder stems from low self-confidence, and they worry about daily life events like school or work, when there’s no real reason to have anxiety, it could be generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
If their anxiety disorder stems from low self-esteem, and they fear judgment from other people in their social life, and stress about what those people think of them, they may have a social anxiety disorder (SAD).
Your partner could also have other anxiety disorders, but most anxiety disorders have common symptoms like trouble concentrating or difficulty sleeping, or even physical symptoms like breathlessness or fast heartbeat.
Here’s what to do the next time when your partner exhibits symptoms of anxiety. It's time we treat anxiety and its symptoms with some grace.
🗣 Healthy communication
Talk to your partner and find out what triggers their anxiety.
Listen carefully to what these are that make their anxiety worse.

If you need guidance- check out this mini guided session on being - I’m scared that my inability to communicate well may push my partner away.
👀 It's more than just words
Listen to what’s not being said.
Look for non-verbal cues like minimal eye contact and poor body language. Make sure your partner is comfortable and let them know that they’re in a safe space.
Patience is key, though!
Don’t press them on their anxiety, let them come to you.
👥 Provide a safe space
Anxiety stems mostly from fear.
For example, if your partner has social anxiety, they may get overwhelmed by crowds at social events.
The safe space you could provide would be by taking them to a quiet corner, away from all the noise and people.
In the end 🥰
Relationships, by themselves, are hard.
Relationships coupled with anxiety? Way harder.
But, hey, anxiety can also give you few opportunities to build a strong relationship.

One opportunity would be to indulge in coping strategies like breathing exercises together. Being can be your go-to for that. With their mini therapies designed. by mental health specialists - count it as self-care but for mental health.
Being there for your partner and providing support is all you can do for them.
You can’t rush them. You just need to be patient.

These are in no way a substitute to what a mental health professional can help with. If your anxiety symptoms like panic attacks or anxiety attacks cause intense anxiety - you will cope better with professional help. The mental health professionals that work with mental health disorders (any mental illness) are just a google search away.
