✨POV✨: To overcome driving anxiety would mean finally getting behind the wheel to experience the joy that comes with the ride. How do we unsubscribe from this fear of driving?
Ever wonder what thoughts trigger anxiety?
Envisioning you losing control of your car resulting in a car accident, spacing out and thinking of other things while driving, or even the mere thought of a traffic accident can cause you anxiety.

And what happens then?
You tend to focus less on the road and more on these irrational thoughts to trigger panic.
You can get too preoccupied, say, to not use your blinker, or you may forget to account for vehicles in your blind spots.
This fear brought on by driving-related anxiety can make you want to avoid driving or even stop driving altogether. For some, it can even look like a driving phobia.
Truth is, you don't have to experience driving anxiety all your life. You can overcome your driving-related phobia when you can separate your anxious thoughts from reality.
A look into anxiety 🥶
It’s completely normal to have the occasional anxiety while driving.
But when these anxious thoughts start to cause you intense fear, intense stress, or extreme distress - it starts having detrimental effects on your mental health. It may even lead to panic attacks (a panic attack is an intense outburst of anxiety).
Driving anxiety can also be caused by persistent thoughts or flashbacks of traumatic events stemming from an obsessive-compulsive disorder or panic disorder.

All of these could mean that we experience anxiety behind the steering wheel because of our underlying anxiety disorder - and not the driving per se.
How do we challenge driving anxiety or the fear of driving? 🧐
🔍 Focus on your anxiety symptoms, not your thoughts.
Like, if your anxiety is causing you to hyperventilate, focus on deep breathing to increase the circulation of oxygen to your brain to bring calm.

🗣 Cut out the noise.
For some, silence can help calm anxiety for some people.
For other drivers, some white noise, anything from podcasts to audiobooks to music, should help as relaxation techniques.
Or if nothing else, keep the GPS navigation running even if you know the route to your destination. The constant reassurance that you’re going in the correct direction can help calm driving-related anxiety.
🚘 Break the travel into segments
Look at the whole drive as a course - where changing lanes, and getting through heavy traffic are all little wins.

This means that all you have to think about is the next turn, the next intersection, and not worry about the entire ride.
In conclusion 🥰
You now know that there's more to your anxiety than just the drive.
All you have to do is find effective treatment plans like overcoming the symptoms while not concentrating on your thoughts.
The best way to deal with this is with the guidance of a therapist.
