✨POV✨: Hold on - anxiety can play a role in our self-esteem issues? So, that means there's more to these "I hate myself" moments than we thought?

To understand this, we need to know the difference between anxiety and anxiety disorders.
Anxiety is a normal emotion.
Things don't always go the way we want them to and that can cause momentary anxiety.
But, when anxiety creeps into everyday situations or regular daily life events to a point where you're emotionally drained all day erryday - that is a sign of anxiety disorder.

And how do these anxiety symptoms affect us?
When our negative thoughts lead to negative feelings, they can lead to behavior that affects our personality and overall well-being.
It even impacts our mental health.

What leads to anxiety disorder and low self-esteem? 🥶

Anxiety disorders stem from our childhood experiences.
It can be due to traumatic events in the past.
Or it can be genetic, or environmental factors like home atmosphere, traditions, or even school that contribute to anxiety disorders.
And what does that result in?
For some, it results in generalized anxiety disorder - where there is constant underlying stress and worry.
Or, it can be social anxiety disorder - where past experiences have led to fear of social interactions and people's judgment.
People with low self-worth battle thoughts that question their worth and value as a person.

This stems from a childhood that has exposed them to criticisms, neglect, and comparison.
Guess what - these anxiety disorder signs can also have physical health problems or physical symptoms like heart palpitations, sleeplessness, and other mental health conditions like panic disorder (extreme anxiety leading to breathlessness and panic attacks).
If our anxious thought patterns carry the common theme of self-hatred and shame - maybe our low self-esteem is a byproduct of our anxiety disorders.

How to beat low self-esteem for better mental health 🤝

It's not fun to lack confidence when everyone around seems to be killing it at something we think we can never do.
We can't shut out the thoughts that scream how stupid we'd look if we try.
Right?
This unhelpful thinking obviously doesn’t improve mood or frame of mind. So what can we do to move towards healthy self-esteem?
List all the elements that trigger anxiety or low self-esteem.
For each element, think of what contributed to that - people's critical judgment, constant comparison, normalized stereotypes, or stigmas (the list can go on, but you get the drift).
Counter those elements with positive qualities.
For example, replacing the voices of the past with the truths of the present - "I am capable to try till I get this task right".
Or, "I am no longer attached to the false narratives about me, I am just as strong and confident as anyone else."
